Bring on the Parakeets

Building the Future of Inclusive Sport

For many young LGBTIQ+ people, traditional sporting environments can feel intimidating or unwelcoming. Perth Parrots are actively changing that with their new programme which is designed to provide a supportive and inclusive space, encourage participation in physical activity, build friendships and teamwork, and develop sporting confidence and skills.

From the very first session, which focuses on team building, the emphasis is on connection, fun and belonging. Across the 10 weeks, participants will try a wide range of activities, including floorball of course, and also basketball, badminton, indoor curling, volleyball, cricket, pickleball and wheelchair basketball.

The youth programme is more than a standalone initiative. It represents an important step in developing a sustainable pathway into Perth Parrots’ 18+ floorball club, and the multisport programme introduces young people to the sport whilst building foundational skills that can support progression. The programme will introduce floorball fundamentals early on whilst creating a strong sense of community, and develop confidence in inclusive sports spaces. Crucially, the programme will also help build relationships with club members and coaches ensuring that the Perth Parrots lay the important groundwork for a future feeder programme that supports young players as they transition into adult participation.

This long-term vision ensures that young people who discover a love for the sport at 13–17 have a clear, welcoming route to continue playing at 18 and beyond. The programme is powered by a partnership with UHI Perth Academy of Sport & Wellbeing, Live Active Sport, LEAP Sports and Floorball Scotland, and funded by The National Lottery, Awards for All Scotland. This collaborative approach demonstrates what is possible when organisations come together to prioritise inclusive youth sport.

With limited spaces available, early booking is encouraged. Young people aged 13–17 who are interested in taking part can secure their place via the Perth Parrots website or direct any questions to perthparrots@gmail.com

At LEAP Sports, we celebrate initiatives like this that don’t just deliver sessions, but build futures. Perth Parrots are growing the next generation of inclusive sport participants and strengthening the pathway into adult floorball in Perth. This is exactly how sustainable, community-led inclusive sport should look.
