DIIS meeting in Budapest

Report of the Diverse Identities in Sport meeting in Budapest.

Last weekend, sports activists from Scotland, Germany and Bulgaria joined colleagues in the Közkincs Community Feminist Library in Budapest as part of the Diverse Identities in Sport project which is funded by the European Commission as part of the Erasmus+ programme.

Coinciding with the launch of Hungary's LGBT History Month Festival, we heard from Daniel Szabo  from the Hungarian Helsinki Committee giving us an overview of the current human rights situation in Hungary with discussion on the barriers and difficulties being faced by NGOs across the country. We also met with Hedley Rankin of Central European University who gave an excellent input on historical narratives on the creation of national bodies and the relationship to LGBTIQ+ identities in sport.

Maria Takacs, filmmaker from Civil Works Association presented ongoing work on our film which is due to be premiered in Berlin this October and features Natalie Deans, a boxer from Glasgow.  Pia Mann and Cordula Gdaniec  from Discover Football took us through planning for our forthcoming conference which will be held on 31st October in Berlin.

We also had time for a study visit in the form of an EHF Champions League handball match between Gyóri ETO KC and Ferecvárosi TC Budapest.
