LEAP want to hear the experiences of women with diverse sexual orientations in sport
It’s clear from our work as an LGBTIQ+ sports charity, that the voices and experiences of lesbian, gay and bisexual women, or women with other diverse sexual orientations are often lost, ignored or pushed to the periphery of conversations. Conversations about women in sport, and conversations around LGBTIQ+ experiences in sport. There are assumptions that Scottish women’s sport offers an inclusive space for lesbian, gay and bisexual women, and while this is the case for some, it doesn’t give reason enough to leave their identities and experiences unexplored. We also know that some women with diverse sexual orientations have faced discrimination, harassment and aggression in sport and it’s important to better understand these experiences. By learning from those who are willing to participate and share, we want to shape our future work and ensure women with diverse sexual orientations can access, enjoy and excel in sport and physical activity.
This work brings women with diverse sexual orientations together to explore their identities and experiences in sport and physical activity. When we refer to women we mean it to include cisgender women and transgender women, as well as non-binary or genderfluid people who identify in a significant way as women or female. Although we have a central focus on sexual orientation, we recognise, respect and value that experiences in sport are also shaped by other aspects of identity. We seek to include women from a mixture of sporting/physical activity backgrounds; those who are members or participants in sports groups, clubs and initiatives and those who are interested in accessing sport but aren’t currently active.
Our starting point is to bring women with diverse sexual orientations together for online group discussions to gather experiences. These discussions will take place over Zoom and will be recorded for internal project use only. This work is people-led, meaning that those participating have a say in the design and delivery of the project.
