Joint Statement from LGBTQIA+ Organisations in Scotland to our Community

The Supreme Court ruling last week has had a significant impact on our community, and we’ve been taking time to properly digest it before we release any further resources or statements about what it might mean.

The judgment is long and complex, and understanding it fully is incredibly important to how we move forward as a community. We value the trust that the community puts in us as organisations, and the last thing we want to do is tell you something that might be wrong about something so important.

We understand that there is a lot of talk in the media, on social media, and other platforms about what this ruling means. The truth is that nobody knows quite yet, and we would suggest being sceptical of any sources who seem to have all the answers already, but we are working hard to make sure that we can communicate accurate information to you as soon as we can. This issue is too important to get it wrong, and it is very normal for it to take a long time to understand the full impacts of a ruling like this, even though we know that many people are desperately in need of answers.

We also know that many trans and non-binary people, and our wider networks of friends, families, colleagues and allies want to know what action they can take right now to make things better. So do we, and we will share our actions and ideas with you as soon as possible. We are working to ensure that our services are as available and signposted as possible so that everyone who needs our help can reach us – but we cannot do this alone, and we very much need the help of everyone who cares about the rights and wellbeing of trans and non-binary people going forward. Please keep an eye on our websites and social media feeds for ways you can support and donate to keep us going and help support this vital work.

At the moment, one of the most vital things we can do is look out for each other, and provide love, support, and compassion to our community, allies, and loved ones who are impacted by the distress and uncertainty that the last week has brought. As organisations with many trans and non-binary staff members, volunteers and community members, we too see and feel this distress deeply, and are doing what we can to try and keep each other going, so we hope you can do the same too.
