Play your part in Festival Fortnight 2019!
Entering its seventh year, Festival Fortnight is Scotland’s only LGBTI sports festival. LEAP Sports Scotland are calling individuals, groups and organisations to run an event and get involved in Festival Fortnight 2019, which runs 17-30th June. Your festival event doesn’t have to be sport delivery, LEAP wants Festival Fortnight to offer something for everyone, also including recreational, academic, social and cultural events.
The festival aims to increase the visibility and participation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people in Scottish sport and explore LGBTI and wider equality and human rights issues in sport. In order to meet these aims and encourage a diverse and exciting programme, we are offering small grants to youth, community and sports groups in addition to our regular listing. The deadline to apply for a grant or list your Festival Fortnight event is 5PM, 16th April.
Festival Fortnight is open to anyone who wants to run an event in Scotland during the two-week period. Running an event for Festival Fortnight can help in a multitude of ways. Every group or organisation is different, but you might find FF aids you in attracting more LGBTI members, helps you show solidarity with the LGBTI sporting community, increases your awareness of the issues at play, or facilitates celebration of LGBTI participation and identity.
Last year’s festival saw participation from 44 partners and approximately 850 participants across 83 individual events. Many participants reported that events during the fortnight offered a pathway into regular sports participation. Others stated that through increasing visibility around LGBTI people in sport, the festival gave them the confidence to try something new. Several people mentioned that events ‘opened their eyes’ to LGBTI issues in sport, while other events allowed people to delve into and reflect on their own sporting experiences.
