Scottish Women & Girls in Sport Week: Annet

Annet is a participant of the Just Active project funded by Wellbeing For Longer Glasgow.

Hello, my name is Annet, my pronouns are She/Her. I am an asylum seeker in the UK and I am proudly a part of the LGBT community. I have been involving myself in various sports activities with LEAP Sports ever since I arrived in Glasgow. For example I have been to volleyball with “Make Monday Volleyball”,  I joined the cycling through the Just Active programme and I am looking forward to start playing netball soon.

Being involved in all of this has given me a sense of belonging and socialising with other people in the LGBT community. My mental health has improved since I started engaging in sports. I have also gained more confidence in myself to associate with other people. I thank LEAP Sports and other LGBT groups for the opportunities they offer us to live freely and proudly in who we are.

I encourage women and girls to engage in sports as it’s a good self-esteem booster and good for socialising with different people.

Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week provides an opportunity to celebrate inclusion, whilst continuing to promote the visibility and participation of women and girls in sport and physical activity, and highlighting the many health benefits it can bring to physical, mental and social health.
